A Team Full Of All Stars

All Star Game

With the All Star ballots announced today, it got me to thinking which Orioles might make it. Last season we had three All Stars in Jim Johnson, Adam Jones, and Matt Wieters, the most the Orioles had in seven seasons. With a different MVP every game, there are numerous names being bandied around.

Who should make it? Solid cases could be made for Chris Davis, Manny Machado, Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Jim Johnson, Matt Wieters, and Darren O’Day. Chris Davis would be the obvious choice. He has made a name for himself this season with his seven homeruns and 22 RBIs (second in the American League behind Mike Napoli). Not only does he hit homeruns, but he crushes them out of the park. He holds the third longest hit home run at Camden Yards. Adam Jones and Nick Markakis are consistent hitters and while they might not wow with their power, get on base and score runs. Matt Wieters has a good shot to make the team again this year, especially with his defensive performance behind the plate; he has thrown out seven of eleven. His batting average of .215 might hold him back in the votes.

Both Jim Johnson and Darren O’Day from the bullpen should make it. Johnson has a solid chance after his season last year (not to mention his stint in the Game last season), and once again leads in the American League with his eight saves. Darren O’Day is having an outstanding season as a reliever, but he is not well-known which might hurt. His numbers are dazzling this season though, with a 0.79 ERA, only giving up one earned run in 11.1 innings pitched.

Manny Machado might be the sleeper pick this season. He has made plenty of All Star caliber plays at third, and is a consistent hitter at the plate. With his speed and athleticism, he is the complete package.

The Orioles gave themselves a name last season by making the playoffs, so hopefully in 2013 they will get even more recognition in the All Star Game; here’s hoping to at least four players. Prediction: Jim Johnson, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, Matt Wieters.

Any predictions?
