Bright Side Of The O’s

Wieters Walk OffWhat a game last night! A walk off grand slam by Matt Wieters! Couldn’t have asked for anything better myself!

As promised, I will take a look at the positions/areas that are of great strength to the 2013 Orioles. The first thing that sticks out to me is the defense. After all, we had three Gold Glove winners in 2012 in Hardy, Jones, and Wieters. Wieters is one of the best catchers in baseball and so far in 2013 has thrown out 7 out of 9 runners attempting to steal; almost a sure throw out everytime! Our outfield of Markakis (Gold Glove winner in 2011), Jones, and McClouth is stellar with a combination of great speed and great arms. The left side of the infield is solid with Hardy and Machado. I have seen many Web Gems from Machado so far in 2013, and he is only 20! In 2013, we could have a potential for another three or more Gold Glove winners!

And who can forget our closer? Jim Johnson is one of the best in the game right now, and leads the league in saves with six. He also led all of major league baseball in saves last season with 51. I feel confident when he steps on the mound, even with a one-run lead.

Our middle relievers are also a strength. Darren O’Day, Troy Patton, T.J. McFarland, and Brian Matusz have all proven to be strong relievers and can work multiple innings in a game. Since none of the Orioles starters in 2013 have been able to complete seven innings, it is important that these middle relievers don’t get too worn out and can last the entire season.

If the starting pitching can start pitching more innings, and if the bottom of the Orioles lineup can become more consistent at the plate, the Orioles will be on their way to the playoffs!
